She has worked hard throughout her life, sacrificed for the people around her, and supported others with a depth of love that is rare. When her own mother became bedridden and began needing home care, Melissa and her loved ones met that season with extraordinary devotion. They found a rhythm for feeding, turning, cleaning, and caring for her, and most of all they gave her the dignity of being surrounded by love in a familiar place, peacefully cared for at the lake house by the people she knew.
Being close to that experience showed me who Melissa really is. She understands caregiving not only as a nurse, but as a daughter and as someone who has lived through the physical, emotional, and spiritual weight of it. She knows how hard it is. Before meeting Melissa, my mother's health was acutely declining and we were unsure why. Melissa visited my mother at home the same day we reached out to her and she used her clinical knowledge to stabilize my mother, preventing a trip to the ER.
Melissa then made phone calls to coordinate a same day physicians visit that I would not know how to do and my mother was quickly diagnosed and treated. However, a week later my mother was not improving and Melissa suggested that she be seen again by the same physician after reviewing the medication that the physician prescribed. Melissa also offered to participate in the office visit via phone call since we are located on the East Coast. She offered this service to help navigate the follow up visit as we were frustrated and overwhelmed with the healthcare system and unsure what questions to ask the physician. During the visit, Melissa spoke with the physician and asked about contraindications for the prescribed medication. Melissa felt this was necessary because my mother also had blood pressure issues that could have been affected by the new medication. Melissa advocated for my mother in a way that I didn't know how to. The physican changed the medication and my mother drastically improved within a week. My mother and I both felt relieved and had a sense of peace with her advocacy and knowledge. Now, there is a forward-moving plan that provides security and guidance with my mother's health that wasn’t there before.Hiring a patient advocate provides the care and attention you wish you could give but may not be able to.
